Mayor William P. Sapelli has announced that the Agawam Public Library will be closed indefinitely so that repairs can be made to address air quality issues in the Library. The building has been undergoing roof and exterior repairs but historic rains this summer and a burst pipe less than 2 weeks ago have caused water damage in the building. An air quality test was conducted by a private company and the results have found mold in four areas of the Library. The Town has already taken the proactive step of hiring a company to do a deep cleaning of the walls furniture and floors prior to receiving the test results. Further testing will occur as repairs continue.
Mayor Sapelli commented that the cause of the water damage has been isolated and remediation work will be conducted to address the areas of concern. “We are fortunate that the main areas of the building and our collection of books and periodicals are undamaged. But we will need some time to perform the remediation necessary to make the building safe for patrons and staff.”
The temporary location for library services will begin at Agawam Senior Center next week. The scope of services and hours of operation at the temporary location will be forthcoming in the next few days.
