GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT
AGAWAM MUNICIPAL GOLF COURSE
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY
The Golf Course Superintendent (hereinafter referred to as “Superintendent”) is entrusted with the maintenance, operation, and management of grounds at Agawam Municipal Golf Course. The Superintendent is responsible for:
C Supervising and assisting with the construction and maintenance of the golf course.
C Supervising and assisting with the maintenance and repair of construction and maintenance equipment.
C Rendering professional advice, opinions, assistance, and services for the Mayor and/or facility=s board of directors as required.
The Golf course Superintendent reports directly to the Mayor.
The Superintendent attends all Golf Commission or Greens Committee meetings. All comments, suggestions or complaints about the course maintenance or conditioning should be presented in writing to the golf commission president or the Golf Course Manager, who will discuss the matters with the Superintendent.
In all instances, the Superintendent coordinates operations with the Club Manager/Golf Professional. In membership club organizations, the Superintendent also communicates and coordinates with all relevant membership groups and committees.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Superintendent assumes the responsibility for managing and maintaining properties which may include:
The golf course and practice areas;
Maintenance equipment;
Restrooms and potable water on course;
Open spaces, wooded areas, unused acreage and areas outside the perimeter fence;
Sod farm and nursery;
Other properties as specified in writing by the Mayor;
The parking lot and entryway road;
The construction, renovation and/or reconstruction of such properties, whether performed by maintenance staff, Agawam Department of Public Works, or outside contractors;
C Provide the golf commission and the Mayor with any major course construction, reconstruction, or renovation plans.
C Plans all maintenance and project work, applying his or her agronomic and administrative expertise to achieve the club=s maintenance standards and long-range goals.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
C Advanced knowledge of agronomy and turf grass management practices.
C Working knowledge of golf facility construction principles, practices, and methods.
C Thorough understanding of the rules and strategies of the game of golf.
C High degree of administrative and executive ability, especially in terms of problem solving and decision making.
C Excellent oral and written communication skills.
C Knowledge of current federal, state, and local laws and regulations affecting the management of golf course operations, including, but not limited to: employment, safety, and environmental standards, laws and regulations.
C Participation in continuing education opportunities such as seminars, workshops, correspondence courses, field days, and trade shows.
POSITIONS SUPERVISED AND NATURE OF ASSOCIATIONS WITH PEERS, GOLFERS, MEDIA, AND ORGANIZATIONS, AND SUPERVISORS
C Responsible for supervising Golf Course Assistant Superintendent, the Golf Course Maintenance Craftsman, Golf Course Laborers, and seasonal employees. These employees report directly to the Golf Course Superintendent during the season while working at the golf course. The Superintendent reports directly to the Mayor.
C Oversees the scheduling and routing of personnel and equipment to accomplish the work. Frequently inspects the Golf Course and related areas to evaluate how well management standards are being achieved and to effect changes in management programs. At a minimum, conducts annual evaluations regarding all subordinates.
C Subject to the direction and approval of the Personnel Director and the Mayor; interviews, hires, trains, directs, and supervises a staff of employees for the purpose of maintaining club properties. The Superintendent has the authority to recommend discipline of subordinates.
C Communicates regularly with other members of the organization=s top management group to discuss activities, goals, plans, and member/customer input.
C Any communications with outside media, organizations, special interest groups, associates, etc., will be done only with the approval of the Mayor and/or the appointed Golf Commission.
BUDGETING
C Prepares the annual budgets for the maintenance and capital improvement of club properties.
C Formulates the annual maintenance and capital budgets so as to implement Board policies established in accordance with the club=s long-range plan and defined maintenance standards.
C Attends all budgetary meetings as to provide valuable insight to any changes that may be deemed necessary.
C Acquires equipment and purchases necessary supplies to maintain club properties.
C Responsible for inventory control and oversees the equipment maintenance programs.
C Approves all expenditures and exercises cost control measures to keep, as nearly as possible, operating and capital expenses in line with the approved budgets.
C Purchases must be made in accordance with state law as well as Town of Agawam procedures.
RECORD KEEPING
C Must keep accurate and complete records on payroll, inventory, weather data, maintenance procedures, pesticides applications, employee disciplinary actions, etc. This may also include expenses, employee training, work plans, pest populations, material applications, inventories, location of hazardous materials and MSDS sheets.
C Prepare (once a year), a Golf Course Operations proposal, which will be thoroughly reviewed by the Golf Commission and the Mayor.
C Prepare proposals and/or cost analysis for the implementation of new products, equipment, staffing, construction, etc.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
C A minimum of a two year degree in agronomy, turf grass management, horticulture, or plant/soil sciences. Course work performed should include studies in botany, soils, chemistry, irrigation and drainage, arboriculture, mechanics, design, surveying, ecology, weeds, insects, and diseases. A Bachelor’s degree in a related field is preferred. Current state certification or licensing as a pesticide applicator is required. Must be able to obtain a liquor license. At least 5 years of supervisory experience at a golf course is preferred.
FURTHER EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND PROFESSION DEVELOPMENT
C Encouraged to play the course regularly in order to evaluate maintenance practices from a golfer=s perspective. It is unrealistic to expect the superintendent to know how the course plays without actually playing it.
C The Superintendent is also encouraged to visit other golf courses, both locally and outside the area to compare golf course management practices and results.
C Encouraged to attend continuing education opportunities such as seminars, workshops, correspondence courses, field days and trade shows. The Superintendent is also encouraged to join local and national organizations/associations as related to the golf course industry.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Several hours a day will be spent walking, standing, sitting, and climbing whenever necessary. Activities include frequent physical exertion in body movement such as reaching, bending, and twisting. This position also requires frequent pulling and pushing of materials. There is frequent use of hand and power tools. Occasionally, crawling may be necessary. The position requires lifting of objects of 50 pounds on a frequent basis and over 50 pounds occasionally
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
The occupant is required frequently to work outdoors, occasionally in extreme weather conditions such as rain, snow, and hot/cold extremes. He/she is also exposed to gasoline and/or diesel fumes, cleaning chemicals, and high noise levels. The occupant is expected to have foul weather gear and rubber gloves when necessary. Steel toe protection is preferred.

SUBSTITUTE SCHOOL NURSE

The Substitute Nurse provides nursing services in a school setting on an as needed basis. MA RN license required, hourly rate $22.00, Monday through Friday.

MEALS ON WHEELS DRIVER - COUNCIL ON AGING
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY
Under the general direction of the coordinator of the home meals, this person is responsible for the delivery of home meals to shut-in elderly clients and the provision of supportive services.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Must have a valid driver's license and access to a motor vehicle to deliver meals on a daily basis (9-12 p.m.).
Must be in good physical condition.
Must have the ability to climb stairs and carry food.
Must be able to lift from 25-50 pounds (food warming containers).
Must be able to go from the vehicle to the home of MOW client.
