Law Department

 

The Law Department acts as the attorney for the Mayor, other elected officials, mayoral agencies, and other municipal agencies, departments and other city committees, and has charge and conduct of all the law business of the City and its agencies, and in which the City is interested. In this capacity, the Law Department litigates affirmative and defensive cases for the City; approves leases, contracts, and financial instruments for the sale of bonds and notes; serves as counsel on sales and leases of City-owned property;, the restructuring of City government, and on public  policies .
The Law Department pursues affirmative litigation that seeks to recover costs for damages caused by the actions of individuals and corporations. It protects the City's interests by defending the City against lawsuits brought for a variety of reasons, including personal injury and breach of contract.

Can the Agawam Law Department be my Attorney?

 

 

 

 

 

No. The Agawam Law Department does not represent individuals in private legal matters. Attorneys in the office represent City departments, boards and elected officials in the course of their "business" as City entities. Private legal matters must be handled by attorneys retained by the individual. What’s the difference between the Agawam Law Department and the District Attorney’s Office?

 

 

 

 

 

The Agawam Law Department represents the Town of Agawam by defending it in lawsuits, advising the Mayor, the City Council, Boards and Agencies as they make decisions and draft local laws. The District Attorney’s Office engages in criminal prosecution of felonies, misdemeanors and infractions.

 

 

 

 

 

Can I file a criminal complaint with the Law Department?

 

 

 

 

 

No. The Agawam Law Department is not an investigative agency. Crimes must be reported to your local law enforcement agency, usually the Agawam Police Department. Agawam Police Department – Emergency 911 Agawam Police Department – Non-emergency 413-786-4767.
